    10-50
  • Location

    In person
  • Level

    3 (out of 5)

Shift and Share is an effective tool for building connections and fostering a deeper understanding among participants.

It encourages active participation, active listening, and the sharing of personal experiences. Use this to create a space for meaningful conversations and a sense of camaraderie within the group.

Instructions

  1. Split the group in half and make 2 lines facing each other so that everyone has a partner.

  2. Introduce the first conversation starter e.g: 'your proudest moment in the company' 'your biggest ambition/challenge'.

  3. Let pairs discuss for 5 min, encourage them to make sure each person has a chance to answer.

  4. When time is up, get their attention and one of the sides to take a step to their right. This way they will be standing in front of a new partner.

  5. Share the new conversation starter, or stick with the same. Give another 5 min and repeat as many times as you like.

Debrief: invite some people to share how they found the exercise, such as:

  • what stood out to them

  • what they have learnt / been inspired by

  • what do they still want to know

Materials // Remarks

  • Remind people they can (& should) continue these conversations, after this session or in the social hours of the event (if this is used within a retreat > when they're back at work together).

  • Establish a way to get people’s attention for the switching moments. Having co-facilitators in the space can help to communicate; also see the tips below.

  • Depending on how deep you would like people to go, you can play with the timings per round; make rounds short and snappy, or a bit longer. Make sure to choose questions accordingly.

  • Tip: put on a timer on the screen to help people keep track of their conversation time and use music to indicate conversation time (music up) vs. listening/switching time (music down).
